ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the effects of cataract surgery on cardiac autonomic modulation. METHODS: A cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted at the Hospital Maria Braido in the city of São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo, between 2015 and 2016. We investigated 19 patients of both sexes who were all over 50 years old; all patients had a diagnosis of senile or bilateral cataracts and were recommended to undergo implantation of the intraocular lens. Heart rate variability (HRV) was evaluated before, during and after cataract surgery. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in the time and geometric domains of HRV before, during or after surgery. The high-frequency (HF) band in normalized units (nu) on the spectral analysis significantly increased (p=0.02, Cohen's d=0.9, large effect size). However, the low-frequency (LF) band in nu significantly decreased during surgery (p=0.02, Cohen's d=0.9, large effect size). CONCLUSION: Throughout the intraocular lens implantation cataract surgery, there was an increase in parasympathetic modulation and a decrease in the sympathetic component of the heart rate (HR). We propose that this result is attributable to the supine position of the patients during surgery and the trigeminal reflex.

ABSTRACT

Abstract It is necessary to clarify if BM and track and field performance can modulate the perception about RPE-session. The purpose of the present study was to verify if biological maturity and track and field-specific performance can be associated with training load (RPE-session method). Seventy-five young athletes (13-15 years old) of both genders participated in the present study. The experimental protocol lasted seven consecutive days. Performance tests (75-m running, long jump, 250-m running, shot put and 1000-m running) were made on the first day. After 48 hours, five days of track and field training it was prescribed, each day represents a training of each performance test. All training sessions had the same duration (120 min). The value of the training load was obtained multiplying the RPE value with training session duration (in minutes). For girls, the training load of 250-m training was correlated with biological maturity (r = -0.36, p = 0.02, n = 37) and specific performance (r = 0.33, p = 0.04, n = 37). All other analyzes indicate that biological maturity and track and field-specific performance do not influence the training load based on RPE-session method. Training load based on RPE-session is not influenced by biological maturity and track and field-specific performance, therefore can be used to control the training load of young track and field athletes. To girls it is necessary a care to control the training sessions intensity of 250-m running.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose: The baseline PSA has been proposed as a possible marker for prostate cancer. The PSA determination before 40 years seems interesting because it not suffers yet the drawbacks related to more advanced ages. Considering the scarcity of data on this topic, an analysis of PSA kinetics in this period seems interesting. Materials and Methods: A retrospective assay in a database of a private diagnostic center was performed from 2003 to 2016. All subjects with a PSA before 40 years were included. Results: 92995 patients performed PSA between the ages of 21 - 39. The mean value ranged from 0.66 ng / mL (at age 22) to 0.76 ng / mL (at age 39) and the overall mean was 0.73 ng / mL. As for outliers, 3783 individuals presented a baseline PSA > 1.6 ng / mL (p95). A linear regression model showed that each year there is a PSA increase of 0.0055 ng / mL (β = 0.0055; r2 = 0.0020; p < 0.001). A plateau in PSA between 23 and 32 years was found and there were only minimal variations among the ages regardless of the evaluated percentile. Conclusion: It was demonstrated that PSA kinetics before 40 years is a very slow and progressive phenomenon regardless of the assessed percentile. Considering our results, it could be suggested that any PSA performed in this period could represent the baseline value without significant distortions.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to describe, report and analyze the self-perception of homosexual athletes behavior in Volleyball, as well as, to observe what were their perceptions of sexual identity within the sports, and cases of prejudice and discrimination suffered by them that have hampered sports career. The participants were four gays professionals male athletes of volleyball in southeastern Brazil. Participants responded to a semi-structured interview that the data were analyzed through speech analysis. They believe that the volleyball tolerates homosexuals' athletes, provided they retain their supposedly appropriate gender orientation and reported some cases of prejudice, between fans, coaches and other homosexual athletes. As a limitation to this study was observed the resistance of gay athletes to discuss on the topic. It was concluded that the discreet homosexual orientation is more tolerable than a feminine gender orientation in terms of athletic identity in this sport environment. It was seem through athletes' speeches that a cross gender orientation does that technicals and tacticals skills being disregarded....(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the Brazilian scientific production on Athletics between 1999 and 2013. A total of 162 articles were identified, and 55 studies were selected that approached Athletics as the main theme of the article. Of these, 43 articles (78.2%) were related to Biodynamics of the Human Movement, and 12 (21.8%) with Pedagogy of the Human Movement. Analyzing the studies, 30.9% (17) corresponded to research in the physiology of the exercise, 20% (11) corresponded to studies on sports injuries, 10% (6) on sports biomechanics, 7.3% ( 4) sports psychology and 7.3% (4) sports nutrition. The areas with the least research were sports training, sports initiation and sport history / sociology, with 5.5% (3) in each one, and the lowest proportion of studies occurred in the area of sports pedagogy and doping, with 3.6% (2) of the studies found in the literature review. Six studies did not present a single modality as a central focus in the investigation, another fifteen focused in middle and long-distance events, eight road running and marathon, seven sprints, six studies focused on Brazilian Paralympic athletes, and with a lower percentage jumping and throwing events and school athletics with one study each. It is concluded that it is important to consider the evaluation criteria of the courses and thus, the entry of teachers into the country's postgraduate programs, as this seems to limit research in the area of Pedagogy of Human Movement. It is also necessary to qualify the research on Athletics in Brazil, to develop researches with better methodological aproach, that is, longitudinal studies, intervention studies, validation studies of methods, studies of literature review and qualitative studies, to improve the sample in the studies and diversify the research evidence...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Talk Test is a tool used to to evaluate by a subjective manner the optimal exercise intensity. It is based on individual capacity to maintain a confortable speech during the effort. The aim of the study was to verify evidence of validitiy (concurrent and constructo) of the Talk Test. Fourteen subjects (7 males and 7 females) volunteered to a cicle ergometer progressive test with intial load of 25 Watts and increments of 25 Watts each 2 minutes until exhaustion. Subjects should recite a known sentence for three times at the end of each stage and indicate their Perceived Speech Production Difficult (DPPF) accoding to the scale of Rotstein et al., (2004) where the load at the level 7 which is “difficult” was taken as a physiological threshold indicator. The Second Physiological Threshold (LT2) was considered the Heart Rate Deflection Point (PDFC) identified by the positive Dmax method. For analyzes were employed olmogorov-Smirnov test, Kruskal-Wallis post hoc Dunn's, and Bland- Altman, beyond the Spearman correlation (p <0.05). No significant differences were identified between L7DPPF and PDFC (p = 0.03), and are associated with the maximum load reached in the test (r = 0.90 and r = 0.81). Both techniques of identification of LTF2 - PDFC and L7DPPF - were similar by Bland- Altman method (95% CI = 0.41 to 1.46). TT being an indicator of aerobic fitness, the L7DPPF could be considered a method to predict LTF2.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine the power-duration relationship in upper limb exercises and to investigate the relationships between parameters derived from this function with physiological indicators of aerobic fitness. METHODS: Ten healthy men (26.2±2.3 years, 75.0±11.8 kg, 178.2±11.5 cm and 15.0±5.7 percent body fat) performed a ramped test on an arm cycle ergometer with increments of 20 W/min. Subsequently, five tests with constant load were performed until exhaustion, with 70, 80, 90, 95 and 100 percent difference between VT1 and VO2peak. The critical power (CP) was obtained by means of linearization of the power-duration function. RESULTS: The power-duration relationship was described using an adjusted function (r=0.98±0.02). The VO2 at CP (2.66±0.62 l/min) was higher than VT1 (1.62±0.38 l/min) and VT2 (2.36±0.59 l/min), but lower than VO2peak (3.06±0.62 l/min). The CP workload (103.0±26 W) was significantly different from VT1 (69.5±21 W) and VO2peak workloads (151.0±26.3), but was no different of VT2 (103.5±30.8 W). The association between critical power and aerobic condition indexes were always significant when expressed as VO2 (0.73 to 0.78, p<0.05) and in W (0.83 to 0.91, p<0.05). Determination of CP in upper-limb dynamic exercises is simple and inexpensive, and can be used by physical therapists for prescribing and evaluating upper-limb training programs. CONCLUSIONS: The power-duration relationship in upper-limb exercises can be described by a hyperbolic function and it is associated with physiological indicators of aerobic fitness.
